India's energy landscape is changing — and the government wants your rooftop to be a part of it. The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is one of the most ambitious solar schemes ever launched, promising free electricity for millions of households across the country.
What is PM Surya Ghar Yojana?
The government gives you a subsidy of up to ₹78,000 to install solar panels on your rooftop — and in return, you get up to 300 units of electricity FREE every single month.
PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is a flagship initiative launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 13 February 2024. It is officially recognised as the world's largest domestic rooftop solar programme, with a total government budget of ₹75,021 crore (~$9 billion USD).
The core idea is simple: the government heavily subsidises the cost of installing rooftop solar panels on your home. Once installed, you generate your own electricity from sunlight — and any extra electricity you produce can be sold back to the grid, giving you an additional source of income.
"The scheme aims to install solar on 1 crore households by March 2027 — enough to power 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030."

Subsidy Structure — 2025
The subsidy you receive depends on the size of the solar system you install. Here is the official breakdown:
| System Size | Free Units / Month | Central Subsidy | Amount |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 kW | ~90 units | 60% of cost | ~₹30,000 |
| 1.5 kW | ~125 units | 60% of cost | ~₹45,000 |
| 2 kW | ~180 units | 60% of cost | ~₹60,000 |
| 3 kW | ~300 units | 60% + 40% extra | ~₹78,000 (Max) |
| Above 3 kW | 300+ units | Capped at 3 kW rate | ₹78,000 cap |
A 3 kW system is the sweet spot — it gives you the maximum subsidy of ₹78,000 AND generates about 300 units per month, covering the electricity needs of an average Indian household. Systems larger than 3 kW still receive the same capped subsidy.
Who is Eligible?
The eligibility criteria are straightforward. You can apply if you meet all of the following conditions:

Your DISCOM reviews your application and checks whether your home is suitable for a rooftop solar connection. Approval typically arrives within a few working days.
Choose a Registered Vendor & Install
Select a government-empanelled solar vendor from the portal. Only empanelled vendors ensure subsidy eligibility. The vendor installs the DCR-compliant solar system.
